I've just added W.R. Gingell to the top of that short list after reading Masque in two sittings. This is the best fantasy I've read in a long time. It's difficult to combine fantasy, world-building, horrible murders, mystery and humor into a mix that works, but somehow, the author does just that and makes it look easy. It’s classed as dark fantasy on Amazon, but don’t be turned off if you’re not into “dark” most of the characters are absolutely charming and the world is far from grimdark.
