Malevolent, by Jana Deleon, had an interesting beginning. Readers are given a glimpse of Detective Shaye Archer's disturbing childhood, which immediately grabbed my attention. Like many mysteries I have encountered this year, the detective, Shaye, has a personal mystery from her past that is way more interesting than the main plot line. I think of cozy mysteries and humor set in Louisiana when Jana DeLeon is mentioned.
